The Night River Bargain

Drawn from: Lands of Marco Polo's Adventures, Smuggler stories, a random character related to Mythic Story, man chasing immortality. Told in English.

They say there was once a tea porter named Yun, who walked the mountain paths where caravans moved like ants. He heard of a spring hidden beyond the salt desert. Drink once, and years would slide off like old bark. He left his bundle and followed the star that traders call the Needle.

On the seventh night he reached a river that ran without a sound. A boat came, piled with silk that held no weight. The ferryman’s face was a mask of smoke. He asked Yun for a price. Yun offered coin, then song, then half his years. The ferryman shook his head. “Give me what you will still have when you drink.”

Yun thought of fame, of a house with red doors, of a son not yet born. He chose his name. He laid it in the ferryman’s hand, crossed, and drank. His bones grew light. His hair darkened. His seasons paused.

He walked back to the world. No door knew him. No friend spoke his name. He lived long and slept shallow. When he died at last, the ferryman returned the name, and only then did the mourners come.
