Heaven, hell and sacred lands

The Guardian of the Red Wind

Drawn from: Heaven, a story set in Post Apocalyptic World, Guardian, Woman vs Supernatural Beings Conflict. Told in English.

When the sky broke and the red wind began to wander, people hid in empty shells of towers and listened to the hiss of old wires. In that age a woman walked the broken roads. She wore a coat of stitched flags, and the last warm battery beat on her chest like a heart. She was called the Guardian, because she kept the line between the living and the hungry unseen.

The hungry were not beasts. They were the breath of fallen cities, the echo of vanished names, the shine in puddles that called to children. They came at night to trade memory for sleep, and took both.

The Guardian learned their true gate. She drew a circle of glass sand and salt, and spoke the names of rivers that no longer flowed. The hungry gathered, bright and thin. They asked for her shadow. She gave them her fear instead.

The wind turned. The red faded into gray. The hungry sank into their own reflections. The people came out, blinking. The Guardian folded her coat and laid the battery in the earth. “Hold the line,” she said, and walked until the wind forgot her.
