Prehistoric tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Bronze Age Collapse, Member of a travelling actors band, Trickster, something suitable with period. Told in English.

They left the burned coast at dusk, a band of six with masks and drums. Oren carried their purse and the lead mask, shaped like a bull. In the hill towns, folk feared the sky. They told of the Law of the Third Tide: every third moon the sea walked inland, silent as a thief, and whoever faced it without a gift would lose a voice, a child, or a home.

They reached a city of cracked walls where grain stores were empty. The chief hired them to play before the Third Tide, to beg the sea for mercy. Oren learned the old song that names each drowned king. He tied shells to his mask straps. He marked a path to the gate with fish bones, as the elders said kept the water tame.

That night the sea rose like a herd, but stopped at the bone-line. A shadow moved within it, shaped like a reed boat. It wanted the lost song back. Oren sang. The water laid down jars, full of salt and pearls. They fed the city. In the morning their purse was heavy, and the masks smelled of brine and saved lives.
