Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Frankish Empire, Children story, Superhuman Helper, an old man reflecting on his life. Told in English.
The old man sat by the river that split the frost-hardened plain. He spoke to us, his breath a pale thread. In his youth, he said, the tribe followed the Wolf-Line, a trail of bones set each winter by elders. The bones pointed south when storms grew, north when game returned. No one knew who first set them. Some said the bones woke and turned in secret.
He once led a hunt along that line. They crossed hills where stone churches would one day rise, and forests where iron sang beneath the soil. They met traders who wore small crosses and drank bitter beer. He took their bread and their stories and gave them amber and salt-cured meat.
One winter the Wolf-Line failed. Bones pointed in circles. He chose the river instead. He lost two men, but found a narrow ford, a hidden island, and a herd of red deer. The tribe lived.
Now his hands shook. The bones still turned for the young, he said, but he trusts rivers more. Rivers remember. Bones forget. He smiled. Then he threw a small bone into the current and watched it spin.
Did it land?
