Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Hyperborea, Danilov Ballads, a random character related to $selectedTheme, looking for an old friend. Told in English.
I am Kark, a silver fox from the wind-cut coast. In our land we hold Tide Listening: when the black sea withdraws, we press ears to wet stone, for waves echo lost names. Last spring the water whispered “Seryozhka,” my old raven friend. He’d flown inland with traders and never returned.
I followed the coast path to the stone forest where frost carves trees from cliffs. At dusk, a glow pulsed inside the rock trunks. Folks say moonfish swim through stone there, and their scales keep secrets. I waited. A scale drifted out like falling ice. It sang the scratch of wing on bark, and a clatter, and a human curse. I smelled pitch and iron.
I found a hunters’ camp. Traps lay baited with bright shells. In one, black feathers stuck to sap. I tracked flecks across snow to a shrine of piled antlers. Under them, Seryozhka crouched, quiet as soot, one foot bound with pitch string.
I cut him free with my teeth. We fled to the shore. At Tide Listening, I lowered him to the stone. The waves spoke again—now both our names, rolling together like oars in calm water.
Did it land?
