Asian tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Asia, Blacksmith guild member's story, Trickster, Woman vs Fate Conflict. Told in English.

Our clan worked iron by the river where reeds hummed at dusk. Mother led the guild. Her hammer was steady, yet a mark lay on her wrist, a birth-thread said to pull a life toward sorrow. Each spring the river birthed Glass Carp—fish whose scales turned clear at moonrise. Custom said the first caught must be given back, or the river would steal a name from the family.

A lord arrived, demanding chain and spear by the monsoon’s edge. Mother promised. Fate tugged. Floods rose early. Our bellows drowned. We had one hope: the Glass Carp festival. We took nets, and Mother cast the first. A clear fish shone like a shard of sky. Hunger and debt pressed. She held it. Father urged return, but the water whispered our surname.

Mother faced the river and cut her palm over the fish. “Take blood, not our name.” The carp swam with a red ribbon of her will. The flood eased by morning. We rebuilt. The lord paid late, but he paid. The mark on her wrist faded pale. Since then, our guild returns the first catch…and a thread of our own choosing.
