Germanic fairy tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: anywhere in the world, Grimm Brothers story, Trickster, Man vs Time Conflict. Told in English.

At the village edge stood the Echo Gate, two leaning stones that sang names when storms came. People believed each name was a warning. One winter, the Gate called “Iria” three times. Iria laughed and packed her rope and tin compass. The elder warned: after the third call, the sea caves flood and lock for a year.

Iria set out at dawn. She aimed for the Black Tide Cavern, where a rusted bell hung. Old tales said it marked a hidden path under the cliffs. With each hour, the surf rose. She found the bell—silent, caked with salt—and struck it with her knife. It gave a dull cry. The cavern mouth shuddered open like a jaw.

Inside, she followed tide marks like steps on a clock. Crabs fled; a cold wind moved against her. A forked tunnel held a shallow pool that swirled clockwise, then stopped. She chose left. The water chased her heels. At a wall of quartz, she saw iron hooks sunk by long-gone hands. She climbed, breath thin, and burst out onto scrub and sky as the flood thundered below.

That night, the Gate sang “Iria” once more, then kept silent for a year.
