Legendary lands

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Ultime Thule, Present world story, Guardian, an old man reflecting on his life. Told in English.

They call our settlement Ultime Thule, though it’s only a clutch of cabins and a radio mast gnawed by ice. The old man, Jarl, sits by the diesel heater and rubs his thumbs, the way he does when the wind keens. He came here in the seventies with a map, a summer job, and nobody needing him. He stayed because winter arrived and didn’t leave.

He tells us about the day he fell through a crusted snow bridge, how the cold bit clean through his jacket and took his breath like a fist. “That’s how life is,” he says, “you learn to breathe under the weight.” He shows us a brass compass, the only thing he saved when his first hut burned. “Everything else can go.”

We take shifts checking traps and keeping the generator from sulking. Jarl keeps time with stories: a woman he almost married, a brother who stopped writing, a mail plane that never came. He laughs softly. “I lived by staying. That’s all.” Outside, the aurora wavers like handwriting trying to finish a sentence.
