Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Somewhere in space, mutineers, Mentor, an unreadable foreign language book.
We are the ridge-settlers on the dark rim, where the stars stream like rivers. Each first thaw, we hang glass chimes and listen for the Drift, a wind that carries voices of lost routes. This thaw, the chimes rang in patterns we never heard. They matched a book we found in a sealed pod, its pages slick with frost and written in a language that bent the eyes.
We called a moot. The mutineers from the salt barges spoke first. “The Drift is a map,” they said. “The book is its gate.” We feared their hunger for risk, but the chimes kept singing the same sharp beat. We tied ropes, packed seed stones, and followed the wind down basalt stairs that no one had carved.
In the hollow below, machines the size of barns slept under skins of mica. The mutineers traced the chime-beats on the unreadable pages, and the engines woke like cows after winter. They gave heat, light, and a soft rain.
We branded the book with soot and stored it in the grain hall. Now, each thaw, we set chimes anew, and the Drift teaches us which hunger to trust.
Did it land?
