Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Magellan Pass, Member of a travelling actors band, Superhuman Helper, anything you want. Told in English.
They came by cart and foot, a band of players with patched tents and two stubborn mules. The youngest, Rigo, carried the drum. Their path bent through a long throat of wind and stone, where the sea on both sides spoke in different voices. Folks there kept a custom called the Tide Counting: if mist rose at dusk in three thin rungs, the road was safe; if it rose in two, an old debt would come due.
On the second night the mist climbed in two. Rigo laughed at it. Then the wind stole their lines, their masks, their food. Only his drum stayed. From the cliffs came a dog with a torn ear and a shell tied to its neck. It watched them, then trotted off. Rigo followed. The band cursed but went after him.
The dog led them past sinkholes and a broken bridge, to a shore cave lined with whale bones. Inside lay a crate of sailcloth, raisins, and a faded banner from another troupe. Rigo paid the debt by beating the drum three times. The mist split. They crossed at dawn, lighter by fear, heavier by story.
Did it land?
