Folk tales from around the world

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: anywhere in the world, explorer adventures, Hero, anything you want. Told in English.

We walked where the sea chewed cliffs of black glass. Our band hunted seals, carried fire in shells, and followed a map cut into a mammoth tusk: a line of seven holes pointing to a place called the Listening Stone. Elders say each winter the ice sings, and those who answer in breath and bone can find a door through storms.

The first hole led us past caves of sleeping thunder. The second to a beach where stones hopped with the tide, tapping like teeth. At the third, a falcon with a white eye dropped a fish at my feet. I thanked it. We moved on.

Snow came hard at the fifth. We tucked under a fallen whale rib, and the ice began to hum. The seventh hole lay atop a ridge. There stood the Listening Stone, tall as a bear, thin as a spear. We pressed our ears to its side. The hum rose, and the wind opened into warmth.

We stepped through and found a valley of warm breath and berries glowing like coals. We left the tusk there, for the next listeners.
