Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Sweden, Karadzic Ballads, Hero, ghosts coming back to protect a loved one. Told in English.
We were a small fishing clan by the long dark water, where stones ring when the aurora rises. Our elders called it Bellshine. If the bells trembled, a journey waited. One winter, they rang like teeth. Our brother Leif had gone inland for iron and did not return. We packed dried flatbread, a birch sled, and mother’s braid ribbon. Father said the old ballads warned of paths that twist like serpents, but the bells would guide us.
We followed their faint chime through black pines and red barns leaning in snow. Night fell fast. The sound moved ahead, always just beyond. Fog opened to a frozen causeway. On the ice stood our grandmother, dead since spring, with a reindeer at her side. She smelled of juniper smoke. “Do not tarry,” she said. “The river eats wanderers.”
We crossed, keeping our eyes on her lamp. The ice groaned. Something below pawed like a horse. On the far bank we found Leif, weak and lost. Grandmother pressed mother’s ribbon into his hand, then faded.
The bells went still. We led Leif home, and Bellshine has not rung since.
Did it land?
