Folk tales from around the world

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: anywhere in the world, Carpenter's Story, Guide, Man vs Time Conflict. Told in English.

I am old enough to feel the wind change bones. Long ago, I was a carpenter who mended doors before storms. In our coast village, we kept the Tide Ledger, a wooden board carved with marks of years when the sea stepped back at noon, leaving a shining road to the reef. Folks said the road opened for those who must finish old work.

When the Ledger’s last notch came due, I had one task left: fix the bell frame on the beacon rock, so ships could hear warning. I set out when the water bowed low, hammer and pegs in my belt. The road gleamed. Fish flopped in puddles like coins.

Out there I met a child I once failed to save; or maybe it was my own fear standing small. It pointed to the horizon. Clouds ran toward us. I drove pegs fast, wood singing, hands shaking. The sea hissed at my feet.

The bell lifted and spoke. Its voice leapt through fog. I turned back as waves rose. The road narrowed, then was gone. I arrived soaked, older, but the ships lived, and the Ledger took a new mark: my last.
