Once upon a time…

I am a fox with winter on my whiskers. I walk the narrow land where two seas wrestle. People here keep Sister Nets: pairs of woven lines that must be cast together, or winds cut them to ribbons. They say the nets are twin spirits, and only sisters may command them.
One autumn, I watched two fisher sisters, Mara and Jelena. Their mother had gone missing where the waters turn black and warm. The elders forbade a search. The girls set their Sister Nets anyway. The first net snared mullet; the second caught a humming light, a round pearl that beat like a heart. The air smelled of copper; the tide reversed for a breath. The sisters tied the nets to one another and to their waists. I followed, step for step.
Out on the narrow rock, the pearl hummed louder, shaping a path of calm between the fighting seas. They walked it. I trotted behind. In that hush, we found their mother clinging to kelp, eyes open, voice gone.
We returned as the path faded. The elders said miracle. I know it was the Sister Nets, and the stubborn love that bound them.
