Finnish folk tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Finland, Chevy Chase Ballad, Guide, Woman vs Nature Conflict. Told in English.

We were five who hunted the long light, but she led. We followed her skis across white lakes and black trees. She said the land tests the stubborn, and the stubborn answer. Our maps mattered less than the old saying she carried: when the Ice-Bells ring, turn or be swallowed. The Ice-Bells were real here—thin blue shells that grew on reeds and chimed when wind slid through ravines.

On the third day, the bells began to sing. The sky turned pearl. Snow rose like breath. She set her jaw and kept on, chasing a ridge that promised a way out. The wind was a living thing and wanted her. It peeled at our faces and shook the sleds. The bells grew wild, a choir warning. We called to her. She waved us off and pushed into the white mouth.

We roped up and moved as one. She cut steps with her axe and we held the line. At the ridge the storm tried to pry her free. She screamed at the wind, not in fear but in anger. The bells answered, softer. The gusts dropped. We crossed. In the hush, she touched a reed. “Hear it?” she said. “The land tests. We answer together.”
