Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Lithania, Smuggler stories, Guardian, divine intervention. Told in English.
We lived where the pine sea ends and dunes begin. In winter, the ice sang. Old folk said the Ice’s Breath chose one each year to carry a secret across the white plain. That year, it chose me. A cold wind trailed me like a hound, humming low. I was to move a forbidden bundle past the watch fires of the river clans. They hoarded salt and trapped travelers with thorn ropes.
In the bundle lay not trade goods, but a child with a birthmark in the shape of a swan’s footprint. Our wise woman whispered the sky had sent her down a snow well. No coin could buy such a fate, but fear could kill it.
We followed the Wind-Hum, a tone only heard between heartbeats. It bent around drifts, dodged hunters, led us to a lake frozen like gray glass. Under it, a pale light pulsed. The ice sang louder. The river clans waited on the shore.
I laid the child on the lake. The song rose. Cracks webbed, then sealed. The hunters dropped their spears, remembered vows to the sky. We crossed unharmed. The wind fell quiet. The Breath had passed.
Did it land?
