Asian tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Asia, Viking Age story, Hero, anything you want. Told in English.

Wind bit like a wolf when our kin crossed the white steppe. I am Edda, daughter of skalds, sent east with traders. We followed a river that crawled like a black snake through frozen grass. The elders warned us of the Shadow Drum, a sky-sound that beats before dawn. When it thunders, you must stand still and speak your true name, or lose your path for a year.

On the third night, the river steamed though cold ruled the land. From the reeds came men in coats of lacquered bark. They carried bows that sang like bees. Their chief, Old Crane, traded us smoked fish for iron. He told of a mountain that moved after midnight, dragging its roots across the plain. Those who climbed it found bright stones and long sleep.

We went at dusk. The Shadow Drum began. The earth thudded like a heart. We stood, spoke our names, and the fog peeled away. The mountain shivered. It was a mammoth, tall as a hall, wearing a hill of moss.

We left the bright stones. We left alive. Old Crane sang us home.
