English and Scottish ballads

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: volcanoes, Chevy Chase Ballad, a random character related to $selectedTheme, Curiosity of exploration. Told in English.

You follow the old song that speaks of a hunt that went wrong. It leads you along black ridges where the ground breathes hot. People here keep an odd rule: when the stone bells ring, you must walk backward ten steps and speak your name, so the mountain knows you. They say the bells hang under the crust, formed by trapped air in cooled flows. You hear them chime like dull cups.

You cross fields of sharp glass and find hoofprints burned into the earth, as if a stag fled through fire. Your heart lifts. You press on, thirsty, soot-faced. The bells ring once, twice, thrice. You take the ten steps and say your name. The air opens. A red seam glows and shows a trail like a ribbed tongue. You climb it.

At the crest, you see the stag, white with ash, standing on a ledge above a deep well of light. It looks at you and bows. The ground shifts. You bow back. The bells fall silent. Heat sinks. In the hush, you know the hunt is not to take, but to learn. You leave your spear and your fear. You walk home changed.
