Once upon a time…
Drawn from: anywhere in the world, Viking Age story, Mentor, returning back to a childhood place. Told in English.
When I was a child, I lived in a village nestled between the fjords and the whispering forests. It was a place where the sun barely set in summer and barely rose in winter. I left that village many years ago, following the call of the sea, but a strange dream pulled me back.
In my dream, I saw the old oak tree at the edge of the village. Its branches reached out like arms, and at its roots, a hidden door glowed with a soft, golden light. I awoke with the feeling that the tree was calling me home. So, I set sail, leaving behind the salt and spray of the ocean for the familiar scent of pine and earth.
Upon my return, the village seemed unchanged. The same smoke curled from the chimneys, and the same children played in the streets. But there was something different about the air—a hum, a vibration that I could feel in my bones. I asked the village elder about it, and he spoke of the "Whispering Stones," a local tradition I had forgotten.
The Whispering Stones were said to be ancient rocks scattered throughout the forest, capable of granting a single wish to those who proved their courage. Many had tried to find them, but none had returned with a tale of success. The stones were said to reveal themselves only to those with a pure heart and a true purpose.
Curiosity tugged at me, and that night, under a sky full of stars, I ventured into the forest. The path was familiar, but the shadows seemed to dance more lively than I remembered. As I walked, I heard soft murmurs, like the forest itself was speaking.
I followed the whispers deeper into the woods, where I found a clearing bathed in moonlight. In its center stood the old oak tree from my dream. Its roots twisted and turned, and at its base, three stones lay in a perfect circle. They shimmered faintly, as if inviting me to step closer.
I knelt beside the stones and placed my hand on the largest one. The whispers grew louder, forming words that echoed in my mind. They asked for my wish, and without thinking, I wished to see the world through the eyes of my childhood once more.
The stones glowed brightly, and a warmth spread through me. Suddenly, I was no longer in the forest. I was a child again, running through the village, feeling the joy and wonder of discovery at every turn. I saw the faces of old friends, heard the stories of the elders, and felt the simple happiness of those days.
But the vision faded, and I found myself back in the forest, kneeling by the stones. The whispers were gone, but the warmth remained, filling me with a sense of peace and understanding. I realized that the stones had shown me not just my past, but the essence of who I was and who I could be.
With a heart full of gratitude, I returned to the village. The journey to the stones had reminded me of the things that truly mattered—community, love, and the magic of the world around us. It was a lesson I carried with me as I sailed once more, knowing that no matter where I went, the spirit of my childhood home would always guide me.
And so, the tale of the Whispering Stones became part of the village lore, a story told around fires on cold nights, reminding us all that sometimes, the greatest adventures lie in returning to where we began.
