Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Eastern European, Present world story, Guardian, the sentence: once you stray from the path you are lost entirely. Told in English.

In the small town of Maplewood, nestled between rolling hills and a dense forest, lived a young man named Alex. Known for his adventurous spirit, Alex often explored the trails that wound through the woods. He found solace in the rustling leaves and the whispering winds, always returning home with stories of his encounters with wildlife and the beauty of untouched nature.

One crisp autumn afternoon, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple, Alex decided to take a new path he had never explored before. It was a narrow trail, barely visible under the fallen leaves, but his curiosity got the better of him. He ventured deeper into the forest, enthralled by the promise of discovery.

As he walked, the path became less distinct, and the familiar landmarks faded into obscurity. The trees grew denser, their branches reaching out like skeletal arms, casting eerie shadows on the forest floor. Alex realized he had strayed far from his usual route, but he pressed on, confident in his sense of direction.

Minutes turned into hours, and the forest grew darker. A creeping unease settled over him as he came to a clearing he did not recognize. Panic set in when he could no longer discern the way back. The realization hit him with the weight of the world: once you stray from the path, you are lost entirely.

Desperation clawed at his chest as he tried to retrace his steps, but every turn led him further into the labyrinth of trees. His phone, once a comforting connection to the outside world, had no signal. The chill of the night seeped into his bones, and the forest, once a place of wonder, now felt like a vast, indifferent entity.

It was only when the first light of dawn broke through the canopy that Alex stumbled upon a familiar trail marker. Exhausted but relieved, he followed it back to the safety of the town. The experience left him with a newfound respect for the forest and a lesson etched into his heart: adventure is only worthwhile when you know the way back home.
