Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Polish, Chevy Chase Ballad, Guardian, Man vs Supernatural Beings Conflict. Told in English.
In the heart of the ancient forest, where the trees whispered secrets to the wind, there lived a humble hunter named Jakub. He was known throughout the village for his courage and skill, though he preferred the solitude of the woods to the chatter of men. One evening, as the sun dipped beyond the horizon, Jakub set out with his bow, seeking game to feed his family.
The forest was alive with sounds—crickets chirped, and owls called to one another. But as Jakub ventured deeper, a strange silence fell. The air grew thick, and the path twisted in ways unfamiliar to him. It was then that Jakub heard a soft melody, like a lullaby carried on the breeze. Entranced, he followed the sound, his feet moving as if guided by an unseen force.
He soon found himself in a clearing bathed in moonlight. At its center stood a figure, cloaked in shadows yet glowing with an ethereal light. It was a Rusalka, a spirit of the water, her hair flowing like a river in the night. Her song was sweet, yet it carried a sorrow that tugged at Jakub's heart.
“Why do you wander here, hunter?” the Rusalka asked, her voice like the rustle of leaves. “This is no place for mortal men.”
Jakub, though wary, spoke with respect. “I seek only to feed my kin, not to disturb the spirits of the wood.”
The Rusalka's eyes, deep as the forest pools, regarded him with a mix of curiosity and sadness. “Long have I watched over this land, yet I am bound by a curse. If you wish to leave this place, you must help free me.”
Jakub, feeling the weight of her words, agreed. The Rusalka told him of a dark power that held her captive—a demon that lurked beneath the lake, feeding on despair. To break the curse, Jakub must face this creature.
Armed with courage and his trusty bow, Jakub journeyed to the lake's edge. The water shimmered under the moon, and from its depths, the demon rose, a shadowy beast with eyes like burning coals. The battle was fierce, the night echoing with the clash of man and monster. But Jakub, fueled by the hope of freeing the Rusalka, fought with all his might.
With a final, desperate strike, Jakub pierced the demon's heart. The creature let out a terrible cry before dissolving into mist. The curse lifted, and the Rusalka appeared once more, her form now radiant and free.
“Thank you, brave hunter,” she whispered, placing a gentle hand on Jakub's brow. “Your courage has given me new life.”
With that, the Rusalka vanished, leaving Jakub alone in the clearing. As dawn broke, he found his way back to the village, the memory of the night's adventure etched in his heart. And though he never spoke of it, the villagers noticed a new light in his eyes, a testament to the bond between man and the mysteries of the forest.
Did it land?
