Roman tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Roman Empire, Children story, Hero, woman looking to do good. Told in English.

In a time long ago, when the world was ruled by mighty emperors and vast legions, there lived a clever fox named Lucius. Lucius roamed the dense forests and rolling hills that bordered a grand city of marble and stone. This city was a place of bustling markets, grand temples, and tales of gods and heroes.

One day, as the sun dipped low in the sky, Lucius stumbled upon a peculiar sight. A woman, dressed in simple but elegant robes, was speaking to a crowd gathered near the edge of the forest. Her name was Aurelia, and she spoke of a plan to bring fresh water to her village. The people had suffered from drought, and the crops were withering. Aurelia, with a heart full of kindness, sought to dig a channel from the distant river to her village.

Lucius, intrigued by her resolve, decided to follow her. He watched as Aurelia gathered tools and rallied her friends, but the task was daunting. The path to the river was long and fraught with danger, with wild beasts and steep cliffs.

As the moon rose, Lucius approached Aurelia. "I may be but a fox," he said, "yet I know these lands well. Let me guide you and your friends through the forest."

Aurelia, surprised by the talking fox, agreed, seeing wisdom in his eyes. Together, they set out on their journey. Lucius led them through hidden paths, avoiding the lairs of wolves and the nests of serpents. His keen senses warned them of danger, and his swift feet found the safest routes.

Days passed, and the group grew weary, but Lucius and Aurelia’s spirit kept them moving. One night, as they rested by a campfire, Lucius shared tales of the forest and its secrets, lifting their hearts with laughter and wonder.

Finally, they reached the river, its waters glistening under the sun. With renewed vigor, Aurelia and her friends began their work, digging the channel with determination. Lucius helped by finding the best spots to dig, where the earth was soft and yielding.

As the first trickle of water flowed toward the village, a cheer rose from the group. Aurelia turned to Lucius, her eyes shining with gratitude. "You have been a true friend, Lucius. Without you, we would not have succeeded."

Lucius nodded, his heart warm with the joy of helping. He watched as the water brought life back to the fields, knowing he had played a part in this small miracle.

And so, under the vast sky and the watchful eyes of ancient gods, the tale of Aurelia and the clever fox was told and retold, a story of adventure, kindness, and the bond between human and beast.
