Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Heaven, Karadzic Ballads, Guide, A good brotherhood. Told in English.
In the realm above the clouds, where the sun kisses the earth and the moon whispers secrets to the stars, there lay a village unlike any other. This village was not of the earth but of the skies, nestled among the golden meadows and silver streams that flowed like liquid light. The villagers, gentle souls with hearts as pure as the morning dew, lived in harmony, guided by the wisdom of their ancestors.
In this celestial village, there was a brotherhood, a group of five brave souls known for their unity and courage. They were not brothers by blood but by bond, stronger than any earthly ties. Their names were Bojan, Dragan, Marko, Radoslav, and Vuk. Each brought a unique strength to the group: Bojan, with his keen mind; Dragan, with his unmatched strength; Marko, with his swift feet; Radoslav, with his healing hands; and Vuk, with his unerring bow.
One day, a shadow fell over the village. The streams began to dry, and the meadows lost their glow. The villagers, once full of laughter, now whispered in fear. It was said that a great beast, a creature of darkness, had awoken from its slumber deep within the heart of the mountains. This beast, with eyes like burning coals and breath like a winter storm, threatened to consume the light of their world.
The brotherhood, knowing their village was in peril, gathered at the edge of the forest where the sky met the earth. They vowed to seek out the beast and restore the balance. With courage in their hearts and the blessings of their ancestors, they set forth on their journey.
Their path was fraught with challenges. They crossed rivers of silver mist and climbed mountains that touched the stars. Each trial tested their resolve, but their bond held firm. Bojan's wisdom guided them through dark forests where shadows danced. Dragan's strength moved boulders that blocked their way. Marko's speed carried them across fields of light. Radoslav's healing touch soothed their wounds, while Vuk's arrows protected them from unseen foes.
At last, they reached the lair of the beast, a cavern deep within the mountains, where the air was thick with darkness. The beast, a creature of nightmares, rose to meet them, its roar shaking the very heavens. But the brotherhood stood undaunted. They fought with the courage of a thousand warriors, each member playing their part in the dance of battle.
As the fight raged on, it was Bojan who saw the truth. The beast was not evil but lost, blinded by its own fear and pain. With a voice as gentle as the morning breeze, Bojan spoke to the creature, offering it the light of understanding and the warmth of friendship. The beast paused, its fiery eyes softening, and in that moment, the darkness began to lift.
The brothers, united in purpose, extended their hands to the creature, and the beast, feeling the sincerity of their hearts, accepted their offer. Together, they walked out of the cavern, the beast now a guardian of the village, its once dark form now glowing with the light of a thousand stars.
The village, seeing the return of their heroes and the transformation of the beast, erupted in joy. The streams flowed once more, and the meadows danced in the light. The brotherhood, though weary, stood proud, knowing they had not only saved their home but gained a new ally.
From that day forth, the village thrived, a beacon of light in the realm above the clouds. The brotherhood, their bond stronger than ever, continued to watch over their home, ready to face any challenge that might come their way. And the beast, now a part of their family, roamed the skies, a symbol of hope and the power of unity.
And so, the tale of the good brotherhood was told and retold, a reminder that even in the darkest times, light can be found in the strength of friendship and the courage of the heart.
