Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Northern Europe, Viking Age story, Trickster, the sentence: once you stray from the path you are lost entirely. Told in English.
In a time long ago, when the world was still young and the seas were wild, there was a band of adventurers known across the land for their courage and skill. They hailed from a village nestled between towering mountains and dense, whispering forests. These adventurers—Erik, Ingrid, Bjorn, and Solveig—were bound by a shared thirst for discovery and a deep bond of friendship.
One cold morning, as the frost lay thick upon the ground, they gathered in the village hall. The elders spoke of a distant land, a place of legend said to hold treasures beyond imagining. But this land was hidden, shrouded in mist and mystery. The only clue was an old map, worn and faded, with a single warning: "Once you stray from the path, you are lost entirely."
Undeterred, the adventurers set sail. Their longship cut through icy waters, guided by the stars and the songs of the sea. Days turned to nights, and nights to days, until at last, they reached the shores of the mysterious land. It was a place where the wind sang through the trees, and the earth seemed to hum with ancient magic.
The adventurers followed the path shown on the map, a narrow trail winding through dark forests and over rocky hills. As they journeyed, they shared stories and laughter, their spirits high. But the path was treacherous, and the forest held secrets of its own.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, they came upon a fork in the road. The map offered no guidance, and the warning echoed in their minds: "Once you stray from the path, you are lost entirely." Yet, curiosity tugged at their hearts. Bjorn, ever bold, suggested they take the left path, for it seemed less traveled and promised adventure.
Reluctantly, the others agreed, and they ventured into the unknown. The forest grew darker, the trees closing in around them. Strange sounds echoed through the air, and shadows danced in the moonlight. They pressed on, but soon realized they were hopelessly lost.
Despair threatened to overtake them, but Erik, wise and thoughtful, urged them to remember the stories of old. "The forest tests those who wander," he said. "We must trust in our bond and find our way together."
With renewed determination, they retraced their steps, listening to the whispers of the wind and the rustle of leaves. Solveig, with her keen eyes, spotted a faint trail, almost hidden by the undergrowth. They followed it, and slowly, the forest began to relent, the trees parting to reveal a glimmer of moonlight.
At last, they emerged from the woods, their hearts lighter and their spirits strong. Before them lay a vast valley, filled with wonders beyond their wildest dreams. The treasures they sought were not gold or jewels, but the knowledge that they had faced the unknown and found their way back.
Returning to their village, they shared their tale, a story of adventure and friendship, of trusting in each other and the path they walked. And though the warning still lingered in their minds, they knew that even if they strayed, they would never be truly lost, for they had each other.
And so, their legend grew, a tale told around fires on cold winter nights, a reminder that the greatest treasures are not those found in distant lands, but the bonds we forge along the way.
Did it land?
