Tales of the sea

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: a lighthouse in the edge of the world, Kurnai People's Myths, Mentor, Woman vs Old age Conflict. Told in English.

In the time before the world was as it is now, when the sky touched the earth and the sea whispered secrets to the land, there stood a lighthouse at the edge of all things. This lighthouse was no ordinary structure; it was built by the hands of the Ancients and held a light that guided both the living and the spirits of the departed. It was said that the light could be seen by those who had eyes to see beyond the veil of the present.

In this place lived a woman named Jirrah. She was known far and wide for her wisdom and her beauty, which was said to rival the glow of the moon on the darkest night. But as time passed, Jirrah began to feel the weight of years pressing down upon her. Her hair, once dark as the raven's wing, turned silver like the mist over the morning sea. Her skin, once smooth and bright, bore the marks of many seasons. Yet, her spirit remained strong, and her heart longed for the days of her youth.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the first stars blinked into view, Jirrah stood by the lighthouse, gazing out at the endless ocean. The waves sang their ancient songs, and the wind carried whispers of forgotten tales. It was then that she heard a voice, as soft as the breeze and as old as the earth itself.

"Why do you mourn the passing of time, Jirrah?" the voice asked.

Startled, Jirrah looked around but saw no one. "Who speaks to me?" she called out.

"I am the spirit of the lighthouse," the voice replied. "I have watched over this land since the beginning of time. I see your heart is troubled."

Jirrah sighed, feeling the truth of her years in her bones. "I fear the loss of my youth," she admitted. "I fear the day when the light within me will fade."

The spirit was silent for a moment, as if considering her words. "There is a way," it finally said, "to hold onto the light of youth, but it comes with a price."

Jirrah's heart quickened with hope. "Tell me what I must do," she urged.

"The sea holds many secrets," the spirit continued. "Beyond the waves lies an island, where the Tree of Time grows. Its fruit can turn back the years, but you must face the guardian of the island, the Keeper of Ages."

Without hesitation, Jirrah agreed, her desire for youth burning fiercely within her. She set out at dawn, her small boat cutting through the waves as she journeyed toward the island. The sea was vast and full of wonders, but Jirrah's mind was set on her goal.

Days passed, and at last, she reached the island. It was a place of wild beauty, where the air was filled with the scent of blossoms and the songs of unseen birds. In the heart of the island stood the Tree of Time, its branches heavy with golden fruit.

But before Jirrah could approach, the Keeper of Ages appeared. He was an ancient figure, his form shifting like shadows in the twilight. "Why do you seek the fruit of the Tree of Time?" he asked, his voice echoing with the weight of countless years.

"I wish to reclaim my youth," Jirrah answered boldly. "To feel the strength and joy I once knew."

The Keeper regarded her with eyes that held the wisdom of eternity. "The fruit will grant your wish," he said, "but in doing so, you will lose the wisdom and the peace that come with age. You will forget the lessons learned through the years."

Jirrah paused, her heart torn. She longed for her youth, but the thought of losing her hard-won wisdom gave her pause. She had learned much, loved deeply, and grown strong through her trials.

As she stood there, the wind carried the voices of her ancestors, whispering of the balance between youth and age, of the cycle of life that must be honored. Jirrah realized that while youth was fleeting, the light within her was eternal, shaped by her journey and her choices.

With a heavy heart, Jirrah turned away from the Tree of Time. "I choose to keep my wisdom and my memories," she told the Keeper. "I will carry the light of my life, even as my body ages."

The Keeper nodded, a smile playing upon his ancient lips. "You have chosen wisely, Jirrah. The true light within you will never fade."

With newfound peace, Jirrah returned to her home by the lighthouse. She stood once more at the edge of the world, watching the light guide travelers safely through the night. And though her body grew older, her spirit shone brighter than ever, a beacon of wisdom and grace.

And so, the tale of Jirrah was told for generations, a reminder that while the body may age, the light of the spirit endures, guiding us through the journey of life.
