Japanese tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Tokugawa Shogunate, Sea Dayaks, Guide, A good brotherhood. Told in English.

In a time when the land was ruled by great lords and warriors, there was a small village nestled between the mountains and the sea. The villagers lived simple lives, fishing and farming, but their hearts were brave and true. Among them were two brothers, Hiroshi and Kenji, known for their strong bond and unyielding loyalty to each other.

One day, a mysterious traveler arrived in the village, speaking of a hidden treasure deep within the forest. The treasure, he said, was guarded by a fierce spirit, and only those with pure hearts could hope to claim it. The brothers, eager for adventure and driven by a desire to help their village, decided to seek this treasure.

As they ventured into the dense forest, the air grew thick with mist, and the trees whispered secrets of old. Hiroshi, the elder, was wise and cautious, while Kenji, full of youthful energy, was eager to push forward. Together, they balanced each other, their bond as strong as the roots of the ancient trees around them.

After days of travel, they reached a clearing where the spirit awaited. It was a fearsome sight, a creature of swirling shadows and sharp eyes. The brothers stood firm, their hearts steady. They spoke to the spirit with respect, explaining their quest and the hope it held for their village.

The spirit, moved by their sincerity and the strength of their brotherhood, set them a challenge. "Prove your bond," it said, "and the treasure shall be yours."

The brothers were tasked to cross a raging river, with only a single, narrow bridge. As they began, the winds howled, and the waters roared. Kenji, quick and nimble, crossed first. But as Hiroshi stepped onto the bridge, it began to sway dangerously.

Kenji, seeing his brother in peril, turned back, risking his own safety. He reached out, steadying Hiroshi and guiding him across. Together, they made it to the other side, their bond unbroken.

The spirit, witnessing their courage and selflessness, revealed the treasure—a simple, yet beautiful, pearl. It was a symbol of their unity and the strength of family. The brothers thanked the spirit and returned to their village, where they shared their story and the pearl's wisdom.

In the years that followed, the brothers' tale was told and retold, a reminder of the power of kinship and the adventures that await those who venture with love and loyalty in their hearts.
