Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Sweden, Viking Age story, Trickster, woman vs immortality. Told in English.
In a land where the sun kissed the earth only for a short while, there lay a village by the great northern sea. The people there were hardy, their lives carved from stone and ice, their spirits warmed by tales of gods and heroes. Among them lived a woman named Astrid, known for her wisdom and her fierce spirit.
Astrid was a weaver, her fingers deftly turning wool into tapestries that told stories of old. Her heart, however, held a secret longing. She wished to know the mysteries of life beyond the mortal coil, to dance with the gods and see the world through their eyes. She craved immortality—not for power, but for understanding.
One day, as the village prepared for the long night of winter, a stranger arrived. His cloak was woven with stars, his eyes deep as the sea. He claimed to be a wanderer from lands beyond, where the sun never sets. The villagers, wary yet curious, welcomed him into their hall. He spoke of lands where time flows like water, where life never ends and wisdom is boundless.
Astrid listened, her heart beating with hope. She approached the stranger, her voice steady. "Tell me, traveler, how does one touch the eternal?"
The stranger smiled, his eyes glinting like the moon on water. "To live forever, you must first embrace the cycle of life and death. You must journey to the heart of the mountain, where the old gods sleep. There, you will find what you seek."
The village buzzed with talk of Astrid's quest. Some called her brave, others foolish. But Astrid was undeterred. She gathered her cloak, her staff, and a small pouch of food, and set off before dawn.
The path was treacherous, the wind biting and fierce. Days turned into nights, and nights into days. Astrid climbed higher, the world below shrinking into a tapestry of white and grey. At last, she reached the mountain's heart, a cavern where the air was thick with ancient power.
Inside, the darkness was alive, whispering secrets of the earth. Astrid stepped forward, her voice echoing. "I seek the wisdom of the eternal."
From the shadows, a voice emerged, old as time itself. "Why do you seek what mortals are not meant to hold?"
Astrid stood tall, her resolve unshaken. "I wish to understand, to weave the stories of gods and man into one. To share the wisdom of the ages with my people."
The darkness shifted, revealing a pool of shimmering light. "To gain, you must give," the voice intoned. "Sacrifice your past, and the future will be yours."
Astrid hesitated. Her past was woven into her being, the threads of her life rich with love and loss. But her desire burned bright. She nodded, stepping into the light.
Time stretched and twisted, revealing truths beyond words. Astrid saw the world as it was and would be, the dance of stars and the breath of the earth. She felt the weight of ages, the joy and sorrow of countless lives.
When she emerged, the village was waiting, their faces a tapestry of hope and fear. Astrid was changed, her eyes holding the depth of the sea, her voice carrying the wisdom of the ages.
She spoke of the cycle of life, the beauty in its brevity. She told of the gods' laughter and tears, of the strength found in unity and love. The villagers listened, their hearts swelling with understanding.
Astrid lived on, her stories woven into the fabric of the village, her spirit a guiding star. She had touched the eternal, not by escaping life, but by embracing it fully.
And so, the tale of Astrid, the weaver of wisdom, was passed down through generations, a reminder that the true gift of life lies not in its length, but in the depth of its living.
