Once upon a time…
Drawn from: anywhere in the world, any period, Trickster, encountering a long forgotten place from your past. Told in English.
I was a young man when I first heard of the hidden valley, a place whispered about in the tales of old. They said it lay beyond the mountains, past the river that ran like a silver snake through the land. The elders spoke of it with a mix of fear and wonder, a place where time stood still and the world was different. I was drawn to it, like a moth to a flame, but life had other plans for me then. Years passed, and the valley slipped from my mind, buried beneath the weight of everyday life.
It was only when I was older, with the lines of age etched on my face, that the memory of that place returned. I was sitting by the fire one evening, the shadows dancing on the walls, when the urge to seek it out grew too strong to ignore. I packed my things, bid farewell to those I knew, and set out on a journey that would take me back to the forgotten valley of my youth.
The path was not easy. I traveled through dense forests where the trees whispered secrets to each other, and across barren lands where the wind howled like a lost soul. I followed the river, its waters cold and clear, as it led me deeper into the heart of the land. Days turned into weeks, and my resolve was tested many times, but the thought of the valley kept me going.
One morning, as the sun rose over the mountains, I found myself standing at the edge of a great chasm. The air was thick with mist, and I could barely see the other side. But there, hidden beneath the fog, was a bridge, old and worn, but still standing. I crossed it with care, each step echoing in the silence, until I reached the other side.
The valley lay before me, just as the stories had promised. It was a place untouched by time, where the air was sweet and the land was alive with color. I walked through fields of wildflowers, their scent filling the air, and past trees that seemed to touch the sky. It was a place of peace, a refuge from the world beyond.
As I explored, I came upon an ancient stone circle, its surface covered in moss. It was here that the stories said the spirits of the land gathered, and I could feel their presence all around me. I sat in the circle, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin, and for the first time in many years, I felt truly at peace.
But as the sun began to set, I knew it was time to leave. The valley, for all its beauty, was not a place for the living. It was a place of dreams and memories, a reminder of what once was and what could never be again. I made my way back to the bridge, my heart heavy with the knowledge that I might never return.
As I crossed the chasm, I looked back one last time, the valley bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. It was then that I understood why the stories spoke of it with such reverence. It was a place of magic, a place where the past lived on, untouched by the passage of time.
I returned to the world I knew, carrying the memory of the valley with me. It was a reminder of the journey I had taken, and the lessons I had learned along the way. Life went on, as it always does, but the valley remained a part of me, a hidden place in my heart where the spirit of adventure still lived.
And so, my tale ends, as all tales must. But the memory of that forgotten valley, and the journey it inspired, will live on, a story to be told by the fire on a cold winter's night, a reminder of the magic that lies just beyond the edge of the world.
Did it land?
