Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Eastern European, a story set in Post Apocalyptic World, Trickster, searching for an object. Told in English.

Once, in a land where the sun barely kissed the earth, there was a village surrounded by shadows. The people there spoke of a time when the skies were clear and the fields were green, but those days were now only whispers carried by the wind. I was an old man then, with a back bent by years and eyes dimmed by time. Yet, I held a secret—a tale passed down through generations about a relic that could bring back the light.

This relic, a simple stone, was said to rest in the heart of the forgotten forest, where trees stood like silent giants. Many had tried to find it, but none returned. One evening, as the fire crackled and the night wrapped around us like a cloak, I decided it was time to seek the stone. My heart, though weary, beat with the fervor of youth.

With dawn's first light, I set out. The path was treacherous, filled with roots that seemed to reach out like old hands. The air was thick with the scent of decay, and the silence was broken only by the distant call of a lone bird. Days turned into nights, and the forest grew denser, as if it were alive, watching, waiting.

In the heart of the forest, I found an ancient clearing. There, beneath a canopy of twisted branches, lay the stone, glowing faintly with a light that seemed to pulse with the rhythm of the earth. As I reached for it, a figure emerged from the shadows—a guardian of the forest, with eyes as old as the world itself. It spoke not with words, but with the rustling of leaves and the sigh of the wind. It asked for a promise, a vow to return the stone's power to the land and not keep it for myself.

I nodded, my voice caught in my throat. With trembling hands, I lifted the stone. Warmth spread through my fingers, and for a moment, I felt the world breathe again. I turned back, the path now clear, guided by the stone's gentle glow.

When I returned to the village, the skies began to clear, and the fields whispered with new life. The people rejoiced, their faces lifted to the sun, their hearts filled with hope. I passed the tale to the young, as it was given to me, for I knew that one day, the shadows might return. And when they did, another would rise to seek the stone, to bring back the light once more.
