Japanese tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Tokugawa Shogunate, Moral story, Hero, Feelings of a lost past. Told in English.

In a time long ago, a village lay nestled beside a great mountain. The people there spoke often of their ancestors, who were said to dance with dragons and hold the secrets of the sky. Yet with each passing year, the stories seemed to fade, like mist in the morning sun.

One day, a young villager named Haru stumbled upon an old scroll in his grandfather's attic. The scroll spoke of a hidden path, leading to the peak where the spirits of old still whispered. The village, feeling the weight of their lost past, looked to Haru for hope.

With courage, Haru set out on the path, climbing higher and higher, until the air grew thin. At the summit, he found a shrine—aged but proud. There, he felt a warmth in his heart, like the embrace of his ancestors.

Returning to the village, Haru shared what he felt, and the people rejoiced. Though the past was lost, the spirit of their ancestors lived on in them, and they found peace in remembering.
