Slavic tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Polish, Blacksmith guild member's story, Trickster, something suitable with geography. Told in English.

In a land of rolling hills and deep forests, where the air was always crisp and the sky often clad in a grey cloak, there lived a blacksmith named Wojtek. His hands bore the marks of his trade, strong and shaped by years of hammering iron into tools and weapons. His forge sat on the edge of a bustling village, the heart of life for many who toiled the earth and braved the woods.

Wojtek was known for his skill, but he was also known for his tales. Every evening, he sat by the fire with the villagers, spinning stories of distant lands and old battles. But there was one tale that was not his own, a tale whispered by the wandering merchants and sung by the bards—a tale of a hidden treasure guarded by the spirit of the mountain.

The mountain watched over the village, its peak often veiled in mist. Legends spoke of a cave within, where an ancient spirit kept vigil over treasures forgotten by time. No one dared to seek it, for the spirit's wrath was feared by all.

Wojtek was old, but he had a heart that pulsed with the spirit of adventure. One day, when the sun hung low and the shadows grew long, he decided it was time to uncover the truth behind the legends. With a sturdy pack and his trusty hammer, he set off towards the towering mountain.

The path was steep and treacherous, littered with jagged stones and tangled roots. The wind howled through the trees, carrying with it the murmurs of old spirits. But Wojtek pressed on, guided by a sense of destiny that had rooted itself in his soul.

As dawn broke, he reached the cave. It was dark and cold, the air thick with the scent of earth and ancient stone. Wojtek stepped inside, each footfall echoing through the cavernous halls. Deeper and deeper he went, until he found himself standing before a set of ornate doors, carved with symbols of forgotten times.

With a heart full of courage, Wojtek pushed the doors open. Inside, the spirit awaited. It was a great, ethereal beast, its eyes like glowing embers. But it did not roar or lash out. Instead, it spoke in a voice that rumbled like thunder yet soothed like a gentle breeze.

"Why have you come, old one?" the spirit asked.

"I seek the treasure," Wojtek replied, his voice steady. "Not for wealth, but for the stories untold."

The spirit gazed deep into Wojtek's eyes and saw the truth in his heart. Then, it stepped aside, revealing a trove not of gold and gems, but of scrolls and books, each brimming with the lore of ages past.

Wojtek returned to the village, his pack heavy with the weight of stories. And from that day on, the fireside tales grew richer, weaving the wisdom of the mountain into the lives of those who listened.
