Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Wizardry School, Barbara Allen Ballad, Guardian, returning back to a childhood place. Told in English.
Long ago, when I was but a spry youth, I set foot in a grand place of learning where magic danced in the air and whispers of spells filled the halls. The stones of this place held secrets, and each corner had a tale. I was a young lad then, eager and bold, with dreams as vast as the sky.
I learned the ways of the wand and the art of potion-making. There were friends, too, those who shared the long nights of study and the bright days of adventure. One such friend was Ellis, a clever boy with mischief in his eyes. Together, we roamed the ancient grounds, seeking the unknown, our hearts filled with wonder.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Ellis and I chanced upon a hidden path in the woods behind the great hall. Rumors spoke of an enchanted glade, a place where time danced differently, and magic grew wild. Curiosity pulled us onward, and we vowed to see it for ourselves.
Through brambles and shadows, we ventured, the world around us growing quiet and strange. At last, we stumbled upon the glade, its grass soft underfoot, and the air alive with a gentle hum. In the center stood an old oak, its branches reaching out like welcoming arms. We rested beneath it, feeling a deep peace.
Years passed, as they always do, carrying me far from those hallowed halls. Life took me on many roads, yet my thoughts often wandered back to that place of magic, to Ellis, and to the glade that felt like a secret gift.
Now, an old man, I felt the pull once more—the need to return, to see if the magic still lingered in that old, hidden path. My heart heavy with memories, I made my way back to the place that had shaped my youth.
The halls were quieter now, the stones more worn. Yet, as I walked those familiar paths, I felt the echoes of laughter, of spells cast, and of friendships forged. And when I reached the woods, it was as if time folded upon itself. The path was there, waiting, like an old friend.
I found the glade unchanged, the oak standing proud. Sitting beneath its branches, I closed my eyes and felt the years slip away. Though much had changed, some things remained. The magic, the heart of that place, endured.
And so, I sat, an old man and a young boy both, learning once more that the past never truly leaves us. It lives on, in memories and in places where our hearts find home.
Did it land?
