Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Japan, Present world story, Mentor, Woman vs Self Conflict. Told in English.
You wake up to the sound of your phone buzzing relentlessly on the nightstand. Groggy and disoriented, you reach for it, squinting at the screen. It's a text from your sister, Julie: "Check the news. It's about Dad."
You leap out of bed, heart pounding with a mixture of fear and curiosity. Flicking on the television, you watch as a familiar face fills the screen. Your father, a retired firefighter, had been downtown when a building caught fire. He had rushed into the chaos without hesitation, rescuing a trapped family.
The news anchor praises his heroism, describing how he had acted instinctively, just as he had during his active service. You feel a swell of pride mixed with anxiety. He’s a hero to many, but to you, he's simply Dad.
Grabbing your jacket, you rush out the door, barely taking a moment to lock it behind you. As you drive to the hospital, you recall those stories he used to tell you as a child, about bravery and the importance of helping others. You never thought those tales would become his reality once again.
Arriving at the hospital, you find Julie pacing the waiting room. She throws her arms around you, her relief palpable. "He's okay," she whispers, tears streaming down her face. "A few burns and smoke inhalation, but he's going to be fine."
You nod, swallowing the lump in your throat. Entering his room, you find him sitting up in bed, a smile spreading across his weary face. "Guess I couldn't stay retired," he jokes, his voice raspy but full of warmth.
You take his hand, gratitude flooding through you. In this moment, you realize that while the world sees him as a hero, to you, he is and always will be something more: your father, your guide, and your constant source of inspiration.
