Norse and Nordic tales

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: Sweden, Karadzic Ballads, Guide, Danger of exploration. Told in English.

In days of yore, when the great forests were as deep as the sea and the nights as dark as the void, I found myself following the whispers of the wind. They spoke of hidden treasures guarded by ancient spirits, nestled within a daunting mountain, cloaked in mist and mystery.

Thus, my journey began, trudging through the dense woods where the trees seemed to hum. The path was not kind, filled with roots waiting to trip the unwary. I pressed on, my heart pounding like a drum, knowing that danger lurked behind every shadow.

At last, I reached the mountain's foot, where the air was thick with a chill that gnawed at my bones. I climbed and climbed, the climb seeming endless. The spirits, it was said, watched those who dared trespass, and I could feel their gaze upon me.

Reaching the summit, I beheld a sight to steal breath—a hidden lake, shimmering like a silver coin. The spirits, it seemed, had deemed me worthy. Returning home, I carried tales more precious than the treasure I sought.
