Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Northern Europe, Danilov Ballads, Guide, A good brotherhood. Told in English.
In a land where winter never truly left and the forests whispered ancient secrets, there lived two brothers, Olaf and Erik, known throughout the village for their bond. They were the sons of a blacksmith, strong and skilled, yet as different as the sun and moon. Olaf, the elder, had a heart as warm as a hearth fire, always ready to lend a hand. Erik, younger but swift of foot and quick of thought, often sought adventures beyond the village.
One frosty morning, a traveler arrived, clad in a cloak of deep green, eyes sharp like a hawk. He spoke of a great quest: a hidden hoard of treasures, buried deep within the enchanted forest. Whoever found it would gain riches beyond measure and a place among the legends of old. The villagers whispered and wondered, but Olaf and Erik exchanged knowing glances. This was the adventure they had long awaited.
They set off at dawn, their breath visible in the crisp morning air, each carrying a leather satchel with provisions. The path led through towering pines, their branches heavy with snow. As you follow, the brothers' laughter echoes, a comforting sound amidst the silence of the woods.
The journey was not an easy one. The forest was a maze, paths twisting and turning as if the trees themselves moved to confuse those who dared enter. At times, they found themselves going in circles, and it was only Erik's sharp memory and eye for detail that kept them on track. Olaf, ever the optimist, encouraged his brother with tales of what they might buy or build with their share of the treasure.
On the third day, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the snow, the brothers set camp by a frozen stream. As they warmed by the fire, a strange sound reached their ears—a low, mournful howl. It was unlike any wolf's call they had heard before. They sat in silence, the weight of the forest's mystery pressing down upon them.
The next day, the brothers came upon a clearing where the sunlight danced on the snow, and in its center stood an ancient stone circle. Here, the traveler had said, lay the entrance to the treasure cave. But the circle was guarded by a creature of legend, a great bear, fur the color of midnight, eyes glowing like embers. The brothers knew no weapon could defeat such a beast.
Olaf, with his gentle heart, stepped forward, speaking softly to the bear. He spoke of their quest, their bond, and their promise to share the treasure with all who needed it. The bear listened, its fierce gaze softening. It stepped aside, allowing them passage.
Inside the cave, the air was cool and damp, filled with the scent of earth and stone. The brothers lit torches, the flames flickering shadows across the walls. They moved deeper into the darkness until they reached a vast cavern, its ceiling lost in shadow. There, piled upon the cold stone, lay gold and jewels beyond their wildest dreams.
But as they approached, a voice echoed through the cavern, old and wise. It spoke of the true test of brotherhood, of the need for balance between greed and generosity. The brothers understood. They filled their satchels just enough for their needs and the needs of their village, leaving the rest untouched.
As they turned to leave, the cavern trembled, and a path opened, leading them back to the forest. The bear awaited their return, nodding in approval as they emerged. It escorted them to the edge of the woods, where the traveler awaited, smiling knowingly.
The journey back to the village was swift. The brothers were greeted with cheers, their story spreading like wildfire. With the treasure, they helped the village thrive, building a new hall, aiding those in need, and ensuring no one went hungry.
In time, the tale of Olaf and Erik, the brothers of the enchanted forest, became legend. They were remembered not just for the treasure they found, but for the bond they shared and their selfless hearts. And so, in a land where stories were as valuable as gold, their adventure was told and retold, inspiring others to seek their own paths, guided by the light of friendship and courage.
