English and Scottish ballads

Once upon a time…

Drawn from: El Dorado, Chevy Chase Ballad, Mentor, Woman vs Meaninglessness Conflict. Told in English.

In a land shrouded in golden mists, where rivers whispered secrets and mountains guarded treasures, there lived a young woman named Calla. Her village lay nestled by a great lake, its waters shimmering like polished mirrors under the sun. Calla, though blessed with a keen mind, often found herself staring into those waters, searching for meaning in their depths.

Life in the village was simple. The people toiled under a sun that never tired, planting seeds in the rich earth and reaping bountiful harvests. Yet, Calla felt a pull, an unseen force that drew her beyond the safety of her home. She often wandered to the edge of the village, where the forest began and shadows danced among the trees.

One day, while gathering herbs, Calla heard a faint melody carried on the wind. It was unlike any tune she had heard before, filled with both sorrow and hope. Intrigued, she followed the sound deeper into the forest, her heart pounding with every step.

The song led her to an ancient tree, its roots twisted and gnarled, its branches reaching toward the sky. At its base sat a figure cloaked in tattered robes, strumming a lyre. The figure, neither old nor young, neither man nor woman, looked up as Calla approached.

“You seek something,” the figure said, their voice as gentle as a breeze.

Calla nodded, unable to find the words. The figure gestured for her to sit, and as she did, they began to speak of a realm beyond, a place where the sun kissed the earth with endless warmth and where sorrow could not tread.

“The journey is perilous,” the figure warned, “and many have lost themselves seeking what lies beyond.”

Calla felt a spark within her, a flame that had long been dormant. With a nod, she agreed to the journey, determined to find the realm the figure spoke of.

For days, Calla traveled through dense forests and over rugged mountains. She faced storms that threatened to sweep her away and beasts whose eyes glowed with malice. Yet, with each step, her resolve grew stronger.

At the edge of her strength, when darkness threatened to consume her spirit, she reached a valley where the air was thick with golden dust. There, she found a small stone altar, and upon it, the lyre she had seen before.

As she touched the instrument, it sang a song of her journey, of her struggles and triumphs. In that moment, Calla realized the meaning she sought was not in a distant land, but within her heart, shaped by her courage and her quest.

With newfound peace, Calla returned to her village, her heart light and her spirit whole. The golden mists parted, and though the world remained unchanged, Calla had found her place within it.
