Once upon a time…
Drawn from: Europe, Kurnai People's Myths, Superhuman Helper, returning back to a childhood place. Told in English.
Long ago, when I was still a child, I lived in a village surrounded by dense, whispering woods and rolling green hills. The sound of the river singing through the valley guided us to places unknown, and the wind carried stories of times long past. It was here that I grew up, playing with friends and learning the ways of the land.
But as the years passed, the call of distant lands grew stronger. I left for the bustling towns where stone streets wound like serpents through the market squares, filled with faces and voices from far and wide. The adventures I sought pulled me further away from my childhood home. Time, like the river, never stood still.
Yet, every night, as the stars danced across the ink-black sky, I found myself yearning for the simpler days of my youth. The memory of the woods, the hills, and the river lingered in my heart like a half-remembered song.
One day, the wind brought a new tale to my ears—a tale of a great treasure hidden in the place I once called home. It was said to be guarded by the spirits of the forest, who sought the pure of heart to reveal its secrets. The thought of returning filled me with a longing so deep it felt like a flame rekindled in the hearth of my spirit.
With little more than a sturdy cloak and my well-worn boots, I began my journey back to the village. The path was not as I remembered. The woods had grown thicker, and the shadows stretched long and slender. The hills looked taller, their peaks kissed by the clouds. Yet, the river still sang its familiar song, guiding me like an old friend.
As I entered the village, memories flooded back. The laughter of children echoed through the air, mingling with the crackling fires and the sound of evening songs. I felt the weight of years slip off my shoulders, replaced with the lightness of youth.
I followed the river to a hidden glade, where the sunlight danced upon the waters. In the heart of the clearing, I found an ancient tree, its roots twisting like the tales of old. There, beneath its boughs, lay the treasure—nothing of gold or gem, but a simple wooden box. Inside, a collection of tokens from my childhood, left behind by younger me with dreams of one day returning.
In that moment, I realized the true treasure was not the tokens, but the journey, the return to the place where my heart began. As the sun set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I knew I had found my way back home.
Did it land?
